We would like to have a core set of common fields used in the field layouts for all products, but there will still be a need to support custom fields needed only by a subset of products. If we could have products inherit a custom field layout and then extend it rather than clone it completely, it would help us maintain those common fields more easily.
This feels like it should be tied to this. Because you could just establish standard tabs, or field groups, that way you just had to manage fields by group.

Agreeing with this concept. I need the ability - at a Product Line Level - to denote the configuration of any Products within this PL. This would give me the ability at a top-level categorization to define the characteristics of the Products once, instead of having to define the setup at each individual Product level.
Note that the inheritance doesn't work if I have a need for one configuration for Product Lines, and a different layout configuration for Products within that same PL.
A potential solution would be to create a secondary tab on the Product Line configuration screen that would allow me to define the configuration for Products within that PL.
This would be a nice enhancement.
We want to ensure all our products are using a core list of fields that can be used in common reports.
However they also all have their product-specific fields so we have to create multiple Layouts and if we want to change it at the top level all the layouts needs to be updated one by one.
Inherits and extend the layout would be great
