Allow reusing prefix for products and product lines

I accidentally changed the prefix for one of the products and now it won't let me reuse the previous prefix. Also once you change the prefix for a product, it doesn't update the existing records. It should allow for a prefix to be reused and also update existing records to reflect the change. E.g. In JIRA when you change the project prefix, it updates the existing records (issues) within that project.

Thank you for the request. At this time, it is not possible to reuse prefixes which are currently being used by records in your account. This is done to prevent any overwriting of existing records in your account, as well as to ensure the any existing links to account records will still work.

Based on the above note, current priorities and community feedback, we are unlikely to make additional updates in this area. We hope you can understand.

I understand the hesitation for not using prefixes in multiple places, but the ability to revert back should be allowed. I updated a prefix to see if I could use it elsewhere (I could not), and now I cannot revert back to the old prefix, despite nothing being used with the new prefix.

Now, what I'm getting from the comments below is that I have to delete everything I did under the original prefix (which is exactly how I want it to be), in order to use it again. That is painful and daft.

    Ouch!
    This is not great news.
I was playing around, editing product prefixes as a joke. I made fun of colleagues' products by changing the title and prefix.  OK the joke is over now. While I can rename the product to set things right, I can't reuse the old prefix for the product. :/   Not cool.   As someone else said, surely you can reuse a previously-used prefix.

I guess our product which deals with finding Un-exploded Ordinance will now and forever have the prefix of "BANG".

I made some mistakes the first time I was configuring projects and ended up deleting the projects and tried to start over, but now I can't use those abbreviations.  It's a bit annoying not being able to use those old abbreviations because now the project prefixes no longer match the codes that are being used in Jira.  In many cases, there is a very obvious abbreviation for a project (ex: YMCA, USA, etc.), but I have to use something non-obvious which adds confusion.

    Hi,

We should be at least able to rename back to a prefix previously set in same product line

Does the system check for usage of that prefix as an item prefix, or does it simply disqualify for re-use if that same combination of letters happens to exist in the body of an item, not being used as a prefix? It seems to be doing the latter.

Unfortunately you must have a record somewhere using the prefix - there is no doubt that the check to see if you can re-use a prefix simply checks if there are already records using it.

That does not appear to be what is happening. The system is telling me I cannot use a prefix previously used, and I can no longer find any items using that prefix.

In fact this is exactly what happens. Aha! won't let you re-use a prefix that is already in use for a feature, requirement, release, idea or note. If all previous records with that prefix are deleted then it can be reused.

This is not ideal. When overhauling product organization, it should be possible to re-use Prefixes from products that have been deleted and whose Aha details have been deleted. The system should be able to detect if any items still exist using the old Prefix and provide a warning.
