Preview Gantt when creating a release template

When creating a release template, it is today not so easy to validate from the list of phases that the overall planning makes sense. To do so, I need to create a new fake release from the template, look at the Gantt and check what was wrong. Then delete the release, and possibly do this a few times until I am satisfied with my release template.

If I could directly visualize the Gantt of a release template when creating the release template then I would significantly improve the efficiency of the process by validating visually what has been entered as details for each phase/milestone (duration, days after prior phase, dependencies...)

Workspace owners can now create a release template from an existing release.

On the Releases -> Gantt page, click on the (...) button on the release you want to build a template from, then click Save as release template.

This will allow you to visualize how the release template would look like on a Gantt chart.

I can resonate with a lot of what has already been said here. It is cumbersome that you cannot 'preview' in some way the results of the template. I had to use a combo of modeling in excel, trial and error, and Aha! support to get a template built. Also the spacing out of milestones is based, cascading, off the first phase and therefore start date instead of your release date due to the days after the prior phase value being what is supplied.

It would be great if we could also be able to use the gantt view to drag and drop the milestones and phases in a dummy release setting, removing all the complication of the "days after."

It would be easier if instead of "days after prior phase" the field was "days +/- release date." That way the calculation of the date is more intuitive and makes it a lot easier to include phases that are after the release date.

This was such a long, drawn-out game of 'guess the date!' I finally reached out to your awesome support team who helped me figure this out, but it should not be this hard.

I would prefer to create the template using the gantt chart UI and have the application determine the durations and the offsets.

Agreed — I would love it if we could display a preview of the release template when we select it from the dropdown, before creating the full new release.

I agree. It took me ten times to get my plan template right
