Global dependency report Merged

I'm unsure why there isn't a global dependency view report. Everything is always in context to the object which doesn't help when really trying to see the whole picture. I tried to use the diagram report which is good but still not exactly a fit because there may be ways objects are tied together I'd like to see.  In general, I think the dependency feature is amazing, but is confusing in terms of redundancy when dealing with things like releases and goals because they have custom fields for specific dependencies (goal=initiative, etc.)  Unsure what the point of those custom fields is when you could more easily (and intuitively) just use record dependencies.
