Allow reporting with feature type as a row attribute

I want to create a list report that allows me to show both story and epic records as rows of the list, without having to nest the story under the epic. Many fields (custom and default), such as date range, goals, initiative, etc are shared between record types, but I can't build a report that reports on all record types at the same time. A simple example would be to have a list where the columns of the list would be Record Type (epic or story), record name, and record date range.
