For me personally, it basically adds details to a burn down chart. I would use it just as the proposed screen shot indicates as I've set up custom status to match our JIRA statuses. JIRA is terrible at reporting by development stage, so this would allow us to report on how many features/stories AND points are done and remaining. Simply looking at the quantity of features or stories alone isn't enough since they are not of equal effort. Adding points gives the viewer of the report knowledge of how much effort is remaining and completed.
One customization option could be to sum the total original estimate by feature for each status column or show just the remaining estimate. I would probably leave it on remaining effort for day to day reporting and management status reports.
As Chris mentioned, we are starting to take a closer look at this idea, but we are hoping for some clarification on the request.
Is the use case to show the column point totals when using the Kanban board in traditional sense of columns for "To Do," "Doing," "Done"?
Or is the intent to use the Kanban board as a workflow chart with status like Under Consideration, In Design, Ready to Develop, In Developement Shipped?
If the latter, the point totals might not be quite as helpful because the Point Totals estimates are done at the Feature level (and not at each of the individual feature status levels).
Any feedback would be appreciated as we start to firm up details for this idea.
This screenshot is from our account where we use time for estimation rather than points. So you can see 4d, 5d, etc, in the top right of each card. If you use points for estimation then the point count for each feature will appear in the top right of each card.
We just added this idea into our feature backlog and expect to implement it over the next few weeks.
I might be missing something here, so be nice with the comments back, but I don't see the points on the individual cards--at least I don't see them in the attached screenshot. Will they be there when this releases?

Hope that helps. Thanks!

It would be nice to see the points totaled the same way for each release parking lot, too.
