Solution First, problem definition after
Proposed Short Cut:
When you are in a presentation and click on a view you access the “Edit View” Button. I propose a new button next to it called “Copy View”. It brings up the “Save View” menu directly (usually accessed by the “Views” dropdown menu and the “Save As” action). That allows you to change the name, share, save in (location) and permissions as normal. But when you hit the save button, you return to the presentation and the view remains on the same page and location of the presentation.
Introduction to the Problem:
To create a corporate Presentation Template for all products and keep all the products current on the latest Presentation template, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain as the number of products using AHA increases.
There is no Presentation Template concept that creates a new fresh presentation ready for customization for a new product.
However, there is a Presentation Copy function. Using this copy function one can create a presentation template in a blank workspace (aka Company Presentation Templates) and make a copy of that presentation. After the copy, editing the presentation details allows me to “Save in” a new location.
This is useful for a new product, or an existing product that needs a template update, because Cooperate has changed the default template company wide (executives do make changes to how they want to see reports). If the Company Presentation Template is kept UpToDate, everyone can confidently copy the latest template and know they are on the latest mandated version.
The Problem:
Even though we can copy the presentation, all the underlying views are sharing the original presentation views. To separate the views, we need to Edit the view, Save as, change the filter setting, add to new presentation. Then copy the view from the end of the presentation (that’s were added views go by default) and delete the old view and paste the new view in the original page of the new presentation.
Proposed Short Cut Again:
When you are in a presentation and click on a view you access the “Edit View” Button. I propose a new button next to it called “Copy View”. It brings up the “Save View” menu directly. That allows you to change the name, share, save in (location) and permissions as normal. But when you hit the save button, you return back to the presentation and the view remains on the same page and location of the new presentation.
Yes you need to change the filters, but that is minor and required for any new release anyway. What you eliminate is the tedious steps of creating a copy, adding to the presentation and copy the new view from the end, back to the original location. You eliminate the repetitive part.
You copy the template, copy the views, set the filters, done. Brand new corporate template applied to a product eliminated hours of copy/paste view steps.
You can now clone Aha! views that have been embedded in presentations. Just right-click and select Clone view. This will create a copy of the view and add it to your slide.
Seriously? you are still thinking about this? All the pieces are already built in aha. You need one minor UI change and a call to an existing subroutine. An you are done. One day, rather 2 hours of work and you can ship this. This is low hanging fruit and a patch for APP-I-382. JUST DO IT!!!
I would like to see this in the "likely to implement" category.
Since you have no Presentation Template Concept, I need something to support Large Organizations that standardize internal communication.
This is the same problem as mentioned in A-I-10037 but a lighter weight solution that I am hoping is faster to deliver.
I could live with this solution rather then the full presentation copy mentioned in 10037. Since a new cooperate template is being release next month, I am dreading the date without this solution.
