When exporting an Epic with a custom layout definition to either PNG or PDF format, the custom layout definition is not used. Instead, the default layout is used with the the Overview tab over in the right panel. Since the right panel is a narrow column all the content in the Overview section (that includes Use Cases, Functional Requirements, etc.) is crammed into a very long column with the rest of the page left blank.
So, whether sharing as a file or as part of a presentation, this makes for a highly awkward format and presentation of the information. Recommend that the export use the Custom Layout as a basis to avoid this problem and make for a far more acceptable and user friendly output.
I'd like to bump this request again. As per my other comments below, we're using Aha Initiatives as SAFe Epics with a lot of custom fields to build a SAFe Epic Canvas and even if possible a full Lean Business Case that lives in Aha! These need review outside Aha by leadership team and for this it'd be great to have high quality Word or PDF output. A website view is useful (https://big.ideas.aha.io/ideas/A-I-10184) if it is flexible on layout and if it supports comments, however other good looking export formats are highly desired. One workaround we've tried is python generated webpage extracting fields from Aha using the REST API, and with our own stylesheet for layout. As long as we don't have high quality export output with excellent layout design (customizable is preferred) then we will have to use such workarounds for this purpose. As this is leadership teams' main point of contact with Aha!, it unfortunately doesn't reflect well on the tool as a whole and may require us to argue for the other benefits of Aha! to keep using it.
Thanks so much or this additional context, Nick! Thank you for taking the time to share it.
It sounds like a tangential need here is the ability to share a live view of a single record. Your suggestion to allow "Share as webpage" for epics makes a lot of sense.
Since that request is slightly different than the one described in this idea, I created another idea so we would not lose track of it: https://big.ideas.aha.io/ideas/A-I-10184
Final comment – as requested by Peter, matchign export to the online layout is a good step and will make this more useful immediately, however you could go a lot further and allow export layouts to be customised enough to make a really nice canvas that's very visually pleasing. Not like Aha canvases, but like many of the canvas templates you'll find, but using selectable custom fields from the record. This would be very useful across Initiatives, Master Features, Features, Releases, Products and probably more places. Visual appeal is good in many places in Aha, but could be vastly improved for export or live website output – to appeal beyond product teams using Aha often. Give us our Mojo back!
The presentation view is not a useful replacement because it truncates the content to the frame and again doesn't allow moving fields around to create a nice easy to read canvas. The view needs to allow for any amount of content, and to customise placement of custom fields so that it becomes a really visually pleasing presentation for consumption outside of product management. Without being able to share such nice views, there is a lot of push back against using Aha at all.
This would be extremely useful for our product team and organisation too. Product management put a lot of effort into getting info into Aha, and we use a lot of custom fields in Initiatives (which we're using to represent SAFe Epics). It looks like a lean business case as seen here: https://www.scaledagileframework.com/epic/
Unfortunately the best way we've found to share this information easily with non-Aha users is to do an export and mail merge into a Word doc, which we then share. It works, but it's very clunky. Directing users to Aha doesn't help as most people don't go there often, and the information in an Epic is not displayed very nicely unless you drag the column and customize. However this can't be exported as per the request. If it could be exported to PNG or PDF, or even better to a live webpage or view, then it'd be super easy for engineering and other irregular Aha users to see all the great work done by product management on an Epic. Otherwise we just have the export/merge process which is not quick, so encourages less regular improvement of the content of the Epic. If it was live, or super easy to create a nice canvas view of the Epic from Aha, we could share latest up-to-date content any time.
