Custom field numerical sorting

I created a custom field for rank that I wanted to use to sort features. When I sort by it, it does 1, 10, 11, 1.5, 3

Support told me this is a feature request which I have to say is RIDICULOUS. This is a deal breaker for me. I will move back to spreadsheets which is more useful than aha right now.
