For example, when a user is in the "Ideas" tab, the drop-down should show how many ideas are in each other workspace. Or when the user is in the "features" tab, the drop-down should show the number of features each other workspace has.

Thank you for this idea. We just introduced dashboards -- a new feature that may help here. While it is not possible to show the counts within the workspace dropdown as requested, it would be possible to create a pivot table showing the count of records in each workspace and add that as a panel to your dashboard.
