filtering - 'before or after' in conjunction with 'this/next/last quarter' in reports

I have some reports setup to display 

- initiatives that start before the end of the current quarter, regardless of when they end (i.e. items we are currently working on)
- initiatives that start before the end of the next quarter, with end dates after the end of the current quarter (i.e. items we'll work on next quarter).

I can do this easily by using actual dates.  The existing 'this/next/last' quarter filters don't work, as they are date ranges, there isn't a way to specify 'before' or 'after' this quarter.  I tried using timeframes too, doesn’t help.  I'd like a solution that doesn't require me to update filtering dates every quarter.
