For Scrum, provide a view of team velocity overlaid over a prioritized product backlog

What is the challenge?

  • As a product owner I would like to overlay velocity over the prioritized backlog to see what work I can potentially complete by the end of each currently named sprint.

What is the impact?

  • Given a prioritized backlog I don't have a way to project velocity over that backlog to get an idea of when what work could potentially be completed.

Describe your idea

  • In the Backlog Management view, have an option to overlay velocity over the Prioritized backlog. It should be configurable 1) whether to use the average velocity from n prior sprints or override with a static value and 2) whether to use initial or detailed estimates on the backlog.

  • If switched on, then the prioritized backlog has line(s) drawn over the backlog showing the increment of work that can potentially be fitted into each sprint based on the velocity and sum of estimates in the prioritized backlog. A line would show BEFORE the first feature where the sum of the initial estimates within the increment are more than the velocity. If there are 3 future sprints currently defined then it would show how much of the the work in the prioritised backlog could potentially be delivered over those 3 sprints and what work could be delivered when. The Azure Devops Scrum template does this and it is very useful.
